District Board Learns About Ministry in Action at University Chapel
Members of the Nebraska District LC-MS Board of Directors, meeting Friday at University Lutheran Chapel in Lincoln, were excited to hear from the chapel’s new pastor and learn about the ministry work being done there.
During the business portion of the quarterly meeting, board members:
- Learned that remittance from District congregations is ahead of last year. Board members expressed their gratitude for the financial assistance congregations provide in support of ministry work at the District and Synodical levels.
- Approved financial support to 28 church workers to help retire their school debt. The financial support is part of the Board’s commitment to support and encourage our Nebraska workers.
- Learned from District President, the Rev. Richard Snow, that 25 congregations are in the active call process. Several have been without a permanent pastor for two years or longer. This deficit illustrates the need for more church workers.
The Rev. Mike Giddings, chapel pastor, welcomed board members. He told of his conversation at the chapel with an incoming new student and his mother who were in Lincoln to attend summer orientation at the university. This student already has brought his girlfriend and a student from his dormitory floor to the chapel. More than 60 people attended worship on the Sunday before classes began. A student suggested to Pastor Giddings: “We’re going to need to set up more chairs next Sunday.” Board members also learned from Mark Meyer, director of international student ministry, about his increased interaction with students from South Asia and the ongoing need for conservation partners for these and other international students.
The board’s next quarterly meeting is Friday, Dec. 1, at the District Office in Seward.
