Revitalizing Adult Education in the Nebraska District

Introduction & Mission

God’s directives are clear: His disciples are to be deeply involved in the study of His Word (Col. 3:16, 2 Tim 3:14-17). The Nebraska District is committed not only to increasing participation, but also to fostering integrated faith—a faith that expresses itself in dedication to God and service to others. Our mission is to equip congregations with “best practices” that fosters active disciples.

Why Change is Urgent

Recent surveys of Nebraska District churches reveal a significant gap between our desire for spiritual growth and our current educational reality.

The Data Tells the Story:

  • The “Lecture” Trap: LCMS research (Congregations at Crossroads) shows that knowledge imparted by a teacher via one-way communication has little impact on faith growth. Yet, this is the primary method used in most churches.
  • The Engagement Gap: Only 22% of adult respondents felt their congregation encouraged a “thinking climate,” and only 38% possessed an “integrated faith.”
  • The Proven Correlation: Research by Thom Rainer and the Search Institute confirms that the quality of formal Christian education is the single strongest predictor of faith maturity, congregational loyalty, and new member retention.

Why Now?

Current District surveys indicate that many critical “best practices” in education—such as student-centered instruction and interactive learning—are largely absent in our adult learning endeavors. While congregations desire an increase in participation, a supportive attitude alone is not enough to create change. We must act now to shift from information transfer to spiritual transformation.

The Vision: The Impact of Healthy Education

Healthier Congregations: A specific reduction in congregational conflict and greater engagement in Biblical reconciliation (IRE Study/Ted Kober).

  • Deeper Faith: A rise in “integrated faith” and spiritual maturity, as members apply Scripture to daily issues.
  • Growth: Higher retention rates of new members and increased average giving.

We envision a District where adult education is a vibrant engine for congregational health and individual spiritual maturity.

The Solution: A Road Map for Growth

To bridge the gap between current practices and healthy discipleship, the Nebraska District is launching a targeted initiative based on findings from the Institute for Religious Education (IRE).
